Transforming

We're fascinated with the idea of transformation, particularly the notion of changing into something more dazzling than our ordinary selves. That's what Halloween, Carnival, and masquerade parties are all about. Starting at an early age, we like to don costumes that either accentuate or contrast various aspects of our personalities. We want to be stunning, powerful, outstanding in some way.

My boys were especially fond of dressing up as superheroes. What about you or your kids? When I was small, my grandmother sewed me a handsome, black satin witch's cloak, which I wore mostly to play spies from The Girl from U.N.C.L.E.

Lots of times people go on pretending to be something they are not.

What is it that makes us fantasize about being above and beyond who we naturally are? Could it be the inherent knowledge that we were meant to be more? The Bible tells us that God created man in His image, and God is most glorious, all-powerful, and righteous.

Unfortunately, our sin has left us fallen from God's image. But there is a way back, and it has nothing to do with putting on a glittery tiara or a scarlet cape. True transformation takes place in the heart. When we repent of our sin and receive Jesus Christ as our Savior, God renews us:

"And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:" Colossians 3:10

If we allow God's power to work in us, He will conform us to the image of His Son, giving us "the beauty of holiness". Next to that, those masquerade costumes look to be what they are: useless rags that tickle the fancy for a day.

Beautiful thoughts! I think you are so right about our desire to be more- to be what God intended. Just like earth is an echo of the glory of heaven, so I am a prelude to the "Me" God intends to complete in heaven. (With a new name and everything! I've always thought people naming other people was a bit like the blind leading the blind. I can't wait for the Creator of my soul to tell me who I really am!)
